If you are staying central

Visiting the Baixa (downtown area), the castle, the shopping areas (Chiado and Avenida da Liberdade); the typical narrow street neighborhoods (like Bairro Alto, Mouraria and Alfama); the beautiful historical/cultural river-side neighborhood of Belem (also where the famous Pasteis de Belem can be found) or the more modern and vibrant neighborhood of Parque das Nações (where we live and near the airport) are must visits.

If you are renting a car

Perhaps this is the best option, unless you plan to just stay downtown where parking is harder. This allows you to explore all these areas, plus it opens easy access to the surrounding areas outside of Lisbon proper, like Sintra, Mafra, Estoril and Cascais.

If you plan to visit beyond Lisbon

Portugal is full of regions to explore particularly during the summer time, like in the South with Alentejo if you fancy rural areas or Algarve if you are looking at some beach-going; or North with Coimbra, Leiria, Porto and Guimarães (the cradle of Portugal) if you are into the cultural and traditional. If you are heading North and are into Wines, don’t miss the Douro Valley, it’s absolutely a must see!

Beyond Portugal

Well, since you’re here, Spain is just around the corner and cities like Madrid, Sevilla and Málaga all within a couple of hours drive!
